June Award Cord: A Grene Dorge (fingerloop)

This is my favourite fingerloop braid and it’s quite a simple one.  It’s from the Harley 2320 manuscript.  The original reads:

A green dorge of 6 bowes: Set 4 bowes of one color on B, C right and B, C left, and one bowe of another color on D right, and one bowe of another color on A left. Then take with A right through B, C right the bowe of C left reversed. Then low thy bowe of B left onto C. Then shall B left take through C left the bowe C right reversed. Then low thy right bowes. Then shall A left change with D right, etc

Translation from fingerloop.org.

The braid takes 4 loops of one colour, and one of each of two more. The main colour appears at the edge of the band and the middle alternates between the two others.  I think it looks best with the main colour darker than the others so when I’m making an award cord I like to make the main colour blue, with one loop each of white and red. That’s the colour scheme I’ll use here. I’m using 60/2 silk and the resulting cord is only about 2mm wide.

Fingers are numbered from index finger A to little finger D.

Set up with blue on fingers C and D of each hand, red on A left and white on D right.

Take A right through B and C right and take C left reversed.

Drop B left to C left

Take B left through C left and take C right reversed

Drop B right to C right, and A right to B right

Change A left with D right

It to0k me about an hour to weave 60cm of this band.  With a thicker thread it would be quicker.
